Reactions Pour-in Following Justice Ziegler Election Announcement

SCOWIS Justice Ziegler Announces Retirement

The reactions to Wisconsin Supreme Court Chief Justice Annette Ziegler’s decision not to run for re-election is pretty much exactly what you’d expect.

Ziegler on Monday announced that she will not run again for the state supreme court next year.

"After three decades on the bench, now is the right time for me to step away to spend more time with my husband, kids and grandkids. I will, therefore, not be seeking reelection to the Wisconsin Supreme Court in 2027," Ziegler said in a statement.

Judge Maria Lazar, who is seeking a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court next month, praised Ziegler for her years of service.

“Justice Annette Ziegler has been an exemplary jurist and a pillar of our legal community for nearly three decades. From her distinguished service on the Washington County Circuit Court to her leadership as Chief Justice of our state’s highest court, she has consistently demonstrated what it means to be a thoughtful constitutionalist," Lazar said.

Democrats in Wisconsin, however, went in a different direction.

“Wisconsin Republicans know a resounding rejection of their war on working people in service of their billionaire owners is coming this November and are heading for early retirement,” Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Devin Remiker said in a statement.

“Ziegler’s retirement is more proof that this is a five-alarm fire for the GOP and is a testament to the incredible work that WisDems and our grassroots leaders across Wisconsin have done to organize everywhere and take no election for granted. No quarter will be given to any Republican running for re-election who stands by Trump and his disastrous agenda should they choose not to join Rebecca Bradley, Annette Ziegler, Rob Hutton, and Robin Vos in an early retirement.”

Democrats have won the past two supreme court elections, and polls show that liberal Judge Chris Taylor is leading in next month’s election. If she does win, Wisconsin’s supreme court will jump to a 5-2 majority.
